With rates of unemployment and underemployment, do you think a college education is still worth the effort?

I dropped out of college when I was 20 for family obligation reasons and was able to get a so-so job. Within that company although I never got an official degree I did further my education and moved right up in the company. I am now (if I were working, I am home caring for my youngest child and husband who is fighting cancer and winning) one of the 4 top people in the organization, small company serving New England. I will return to work with a 60k salary.

That is my story. A young 20 yr old today could walk into our office and get the job that I started out with 17 yrs ago if she were not competing with college grads for that same job. A young 20 yr old will have a terrible time rising up through the ranks without the degree.

An education is a must in this day and age. Now, my daughter is going to start working for us on her 18th birthday and go to school at the same time so she will have her foot in the door but even she (who was raised in that office) will never be taken on as a full time employee without a degree.

She doesn%26#039;t want college full time and I understand that but continuing her education is very important if she ever wants to venture out on her own.
